Chilika covering 1100 sq kms is easily approached by road from Bhubaneshwar. Asia s largest salt and fresh water lake, it is an ideal habitat for aquatic animals. 

For bird watchers Chilika is the place to visit in winter when the migratory birds fly ion from places as remote as Siberia



It is home to Siberian cranes, flamingoes from the Persian Gulf, pelicans of Western India, cormorants, plovers, ospreys, white bellied sea eagles., pariah kites, darters, sea gulls, teals, coats, white ibis and many other varieties of birds. Rich in aquatic fauna and flora the sandy stretches teem with the myriad colours of marine life.

Bhitar Kanika Wildlife Sanctuary
Located on the coast of the Bay of Begal , between Paradip and Chandipur, is the Bitar Kanika Wildlife Sanstuary, renowned for protecting the nesting habitat of more than one million Ridley marine turtles. The sanctuary is home to more than 170 species of resident and migratory birds. Another interesting feature of the sanctuary is the mangroves: out of 70 species of mangroves found in the world, 62 are represented in Bhitar Kanika.
Deep within the sanctuary are several rest house where you could stay. Most of the attractions and rest houses can only be reached by boat.


Those for the excursion trail are likely to enjoy a date with dolphins at Satpada (130 kms) from Bhubaneshwar.


Bhittarkanika is an breeding ground for Olive Ridley turtles. A remote seashore area, it was declared to be a sanctuary in 1975 for protecting the estuarine crocodile and Olive Ridley turtles in their rare mangrove habitat.  


About 130 kms from Bhubaneshwar, is easily accessible from here. It is the largest nesting place of the giant pacific Olive Ridley sea turtles who swim all the way from South America to lay their eggs. An amazing phenomenon of nature, this is a regular annual occurrence. While earlier it was a hunting ground for sea turtles, today it is a model conservation centre for turtles.

Simlipal National Park

The Simlipal National Park , one of the earliest to be taken under Project Tiger rich in wild life, it is home to tigers, panthers, gaur bison, antelopes, sambar, spotted mouse and more than 223 species of birds. The sight of wild animals moving casually in their natural habitat is a refreshing experience. ( read more )

Barehipani: (450 metres) Jaranda :(150 metres) are beautiful water falls and can easily be visited.


At the point of entry to Similipal has a crocodile sanctuary, Ramtirtha.
