Maharashtra , located on the Deccan Plateau , is the land where the valiant Marathas & their intrepid leader Shivaji once ruled .Maharashtra means "The Great State". Its greatness is not in  its size and diversity but its because of it is the home of people from all over India .

The dynamic city of Mumbai the commercial capital of India & political capital of Maharashtra , is a city of contrasts, with superb specimens of colonial architecture amidst the modern edifices of concrete and chrome. 

The 100 year old Victoria Terminus, the Prince of Wales museum, the Flora Fountain and the Gateway of India conjure images of the British Raj days. 

Victoria Terminus (rechristened as Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus ) has received worldwide appreciation for its sheer size , it's ornamental arches , it's spires and dome rendered in the Italian Gothic style . 

Now it is one of World Heritage Properties in India

Take a boat from the Gateway of India 10 Km to the northeast of Mumbai, lies the Elephanta Island a flight of 100 steps takes you to another World Heritage sites at the top of the hill.have many rock temples carved out of the living rock,The main hall  of the Elephanta cave temple contains the images of Shankar in many postures.

400 kms from Bombay , tucked amongst hillocks is Aurangabad with the impregnable  Daulatabad Fort, perched atop a rocky hill. This is the arrival point for Ellora and Ajanta . Buddhist, Jain and Hindu shrines comprise the 34 rock-cut temples at Ellora. The 29 Buddhist caves at Ajanta have remarkable sculptures and wall paintings. The splendid cave paintings of Ajanta and the rock-cut caves of Ellora are World Cultural Heritage sites.

Enjoy a Lion Safari at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park nearby are the Kanheri Caves . Bhaja Caves , Karla Caves  Junnar Caves ,are the famous caves in  "The Great State".of the Maratha chieftain Chhatrapati Shivaji,

At Pune, the Raja Kelkar Museum houses an amazing private collection of Indian arts and crafts. Close by, are the forts of Chattrapathi Shivaji Sinhagad, Raigad, Torna and Purandhar.

Matheran the nearest hill resort to Mumbai a real treat after the noise and congestion of   Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar  is  often described as  the Queen of Hill Stations

And for those who yearn for sun, Maharashtra s 720 km-long coastline promises clean, upsoilt and uncrowded beaches.Hit the beaches at Chowpatty and juhu, which throb with colour and gaiety reminiscent of an Indian mela.   If looking for solitute or want to have Hawaiin experience you have to come down to Vengurla on the southern part of the Maharashtra coastline boasts of a lovely stretch of beaches.Murud Janjira, Ganapatipule & many other offers the visitor a heady mix of and more.
