India ’s landscape is dotted with millions of temples ,some of them are historic, some are created by nature’s own miracles and yet others are built as a result of modern architecture and technology.

The Somnath temple is one of the most celebrated shrines of lord shiva in india both in myth and history .

The Somnath temple- a premier Jyotirlinga (deity or luster), which is counted among the twelve holiest shrines of Shiva in India .

The temple facing the Arabian ocean .Its seven-storied Shikhara or spire is 47 metres high. Its flag-post rising above the spire with Lord Shiva’s damru and trishul, is 9.50 metres high. The modern temple, designed in the ancient Chalukyan style of architecture by Prabhashankar Sompura, is the seventh temple to be built on the same site in the last 1,500 years.

It is a wonder of the modern world, because no other heritage building has been razed to the ground so many times by invaders and looters, as well as the sheer power of the elements, as Somnath.

No other religious shrine has witnessed the death of so many thousands of martyrs who have given up their lives through the centuries to oppose the sack of the temple. And no other ancient site has been reconstructed and resurrected age after age, century after century through the faith and courage of the people.

Somnath occupies a special place in the cultural history of India because of its antiquity and its aura of purity, sanctity and eternity. The area of Prabhas Kshetra where it stands is celebrated for its tremendous religious significance. Prabhas Kshetra has always been an ‘energy centre’ and has attracted great scholars of music, dance and literature over many centuries.
