Beaches in West Bengal

        Indian visitor's

        Visitor's from Abroad

About 185 kms south-west of Kolkata, on the Bay of Bengal, is the quiet beach town of Digha. Itís 7 kms beach, dotted with casuarina groves, is said to be one of the widest beaches in the world. The river Hooghly joins the Bay of Bengal here.

With the mild winter of Gangetic West Bengal, Digha can be visited all through the year. However, the best time to holiday here would be July to March.

Fun thing to do in and around Digha!

  • Don a swimsuit and ride the waves. The mild waters here are ideal for swimming.
  • Take a walk! Strolling down the long stretches of flat, hard beaches is not just great exercise, but the prefect antidote to a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Explore a fishing village! Shankarpur Beach (10 kms away) is the perfect backdrop for a quiet holiday, offering, as it does, all the pleasures of a private beach.

How to get there

Regular buses ply between Kolkata and Digha. Tourist cabs and luxury cars can also be hired from Kolkata.

Bakkali or Fraserganj,

Bakkali or Fraserganj, is a relatively lesser-known, and consequently less-polluted, beach. The white sands and the pristine beauty of this beach are the perfect setting for a soothing vacation. Birds feel the same way too! Fraserganj is the summer destination for a variety of migratory birds. You could take a boat to the small island of Jambu Dwip from here.

How to get there

Fraserganj is about 132 kms from Kolkata, on the east side of the Hooghly river. It is accessible by buses/taxis and then on a vessel.

Ganga Sagar

Situate at the mouth of the Hooghly River, Ganga Sagar is an important destination Ė both culturally and religiously. It is here that the Ganges joins the sea and it is at this holy confluence that hundreds of thousands of pilgrims bathe during Maka Sankranti. Held annually in mid-January, the three-day bathing festival is celebrated as the Gangasagar Mela and is the largest festival in West Bengal.

The uncrowded and unspoilt beach on the estuary of the mightly Ganga, makes Ganga Sagar a must-see on the travellerís itinerary.

How to get there

Ganga Sagar can be approached from Kolkata either by road and then by a vessel, or by chartered luxury vessels starting from Namkhana and Kolkata.

So, are you ready for an unforgettable beach holiday in India ?
